District Lights was formed out of a simply desire; my good friend Michael Key and I wanted to work together again.
We founded BladeTV (note: any videos from after 2009 are recent additions and not our work) while we both worked at the Washington Blade. Neither of us really knew what we were doing; I had just picked up my first camera ad was just getting the basic concepts of editing video, and Michael had about three months of photography under his belt. Still, we both had a good eye. Sometimes that (and a lot of hard work) is enough.
Once I left the Blade for their primary competitor, we had to restructure not only our working relationship but our friendship that had been forged n high school. That was, to put it mildly, a bit tricky. But in the end we found work we could collaborate on that was separate from either paper. A late night and a bottle of wine led to some brainstorming, and the name District Lights.
